For the most part in our dojo we rely as much as possible on the energy we ourselves generate through training. However, we do make the usual modern concessions to electric lighting and to heating.... As part of our goal to be responsible members of the communities to which we belong, Huron Valley Aikikai purchases CO2 offset credits to compensate for the limited amount of energy we use to run the dojo. While offsets are a constructive step, we also recognize that reducing our overall energy "footprint" is the best way to fight the buildup of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere. For this reason, where possible we adopt measures to reduce our use of energy; for example, all our lighting is low-watt flourescent and our heating is set very low except during the hours when the dojo is in use.We also participate in DTE Energy's new "Greencurrents" program to support the development of renewable energy resources. We encourage all who have the means to join us in this effort, whether through direct action to reduce energy consumption and/or by purchasing carbon offset credits. Many organizations are now offering such credits for purchase; we provide links to two well-regarded ones below. |
