Why 3 months?

The first three months are the hardest. After three months, you can say, "I tried." If you leave before three months, you must say, "I quit."

Aikido is not something that one can learn, or even really "get a feel for," in just a few lessons. The movements are odd and unfamiliar. There is etiquette to be learned. The style of teaching is very different from what most of us are used to from our schooling. And, typically, none of us had an "Aikido unit" in gym class back in junior high.

So as you think about starting Aikido, we encourage you to make a real commitment to training, even if it is for a relatively short time. This does not mean that you must train every day -- though you are welcome to do so. But at a minimum, you should make a deal with yourself to commit to at least two classes per week. If you have neither the time nor the motivation to do this, you will find it very hard to make progress, and you will likely become discouraged and not continue. This would be a shame, since you will not have really given yourself the chance to "try" Aikido, and will have squandered your valuable time and money.

Ultimately, of course, we hope that Aikido will become something that you choose to pursue for much longer than three months. In our experience, if you train consistently at the start, at the end of three months you'll be in a good place to make an informed decision. And in the meantime, you are likely to enjoy yourself!
