Huron Valley Aikikai Fee Policies

As the flagship member program of the Michigan Budokan (a 501c3 public charity), Huron Valley Aikikai functions as a completely volunteer, not-for-profit enterprise. Our instructors receive no financial compensation for their efforts to provide our community with quality programs, and generally have (more than) full-time careers. We do our best to make administrative tasks easy for our members, but ask you to please bear in mind that your fees and participation are in support of this community, not a business.

Please note the following policies regarding memberships and fees.

Membership Dues

  • Membership dues are your monthly contribution to the dojo’s continuing operations. All membership dues are collected via direct debit of your credit/debit card or bank account. Membership dues may not be paid by cash or check.

    • As part of our charitable mission, we keep our membership dues incredibly low by prevailing market standards. However, we will never turn away anyone who wishes to participate in our programs solely due to an inability to pay our standard dues. If our dues present a genuine financial barrier, please speak with an instructor to discuss appropriate accommodation (e.g., scholarship, dues reduction, in-kind service, etc.).

  • Memberships are not a “contract” and may be canceled or placed on hold at any time.

  • Memberships cover all classes, including those which are made available only by permission of instructors.

  • Monthly membership can be ended at any time either directly in ZenPlanner or by informing us in person, by phone, or email. It is the responsibility of the member to inform us of changes to your membership status. No retroactive refunds will be given for time elapsed between when you or your family member stopped training and the date you inform us of a change to your status.

  • Leave of absence: members may take a leave of absence during which dues will not be charged, subject to the following conditions:

    • Leaves of absence will be granted for periods of 3 months or longer only.

    • Members must specify to HVA the specific start and stop dates of the leave.

    • Members may return “early” from a leave of absence but will be charged the monthly dues for the entire term of the leave if the period of absence is less than 3 months. Members returning “early” from leave after more than 3 months will not incur any charges.

    • 3-month new member specials are not eligible for leaves of absence.

Class Cards and 3-month New Member Specials

  • Class cards and 3-month new member specials are offered on a one-time basis per individual and cannot be renewed. Those who purchase a class card are eligible to purchase a 3-month new member special if they decide to continue.

  • All sales of memberships or class “cards” are final and will not be refunded except in case of administrative error on the part of Huron Valley Aikikai.

  • Introductory class “cards” for both children and adults expire two months after the purchase date regardless of the number of classes used.

  • The three-month term of new member specials begins upon the date of purchase and ends three months thereafter, regardless of when the participant begins training. Extensions will be granted only in extraordinary circumstances at the sole discretion of Huron Valley Aikikai.
